The religious situation in Việt Nam is quite complex and eclectic to a certain degree. Out of many religious varieties, the most common system of beliefs is referred to as tôn giáo i.e. the triple religion, which forms a single entity in which Confucianism, Taoism and ancestor worsip are all parts. Tôn giáo pervades the Vietnamese society as a whole and plays an important part in the Vietnamese traditions alongside the Buddhist way of life. Whale worship, or Lễ Cúng Cá Ông, as the religion is known as in Việt Nam, is acknowledged and widespread mainly among the fishermen and is believed to be an old tradition with its roots in early Cham culture. The present study attempts to elucidate different aspects of this religion, and its political-judicial contexts. The cult is centered upon Cá Ông, the Whale God, who represents divinity as a supreme deity of the sea. Protections at sea, the rescuing of wandering spirits and sacrifices to the mother Goddess of the sea. Mẫu Ma, are all part of the intricate set of believes concerning. Whale worship. According to the 1992 Constitution, citizens have the right to freedom of religious beliefs and freedom of not having a religious belief. However, since Lễ Cúng Cá Ông is connected to spiritualism and spirits are considered as part of the supernatural, which by law still is prohibited, Whale worship and its followers are looked upon with ambiguity.
